“A Celebration of Black History”
“A Celebration of Black History” was the theme for this year’s Black history assembly. The theme was very fitting and we celebrated our history makers, trailblazers and pioneers. Some of the Americans chosen to be celebrated were history makers like Rosa Parks and General Colin Powell, pioneers like Mrs. Viola Pearson and Mr. Harry Briggs and trailblazers like President Barack Obama and our very own Dr. Rose H. Wilder. Our keynote speaker challenged students to take control of their destinies and believe in themselves. She lauded the achievements of many African Americans and reminded us that it is on their shoulders that we stand, it is because of their blood, sweat and tears that we enjoy many of the freedoms that we sometimes take for granted. Mrs. Rivers ended her remarks with one of Dr. Harris’ favorite poems “Equipment” and the last stanza reads: Courage must come from the soul within, The man must furnish the will to win, So figure it out for yourself, my lad, You were born with all that the great have had, With your equipment they all began. Get hold of yourself, and say: "I can." Her words served as an alarm to call us into action and she warns us to work hard in order to become a competitor in our global society. |
